When a game’s date is on the schedule but the college football kickoff time isn’t, book the pieces that don’t depend on the time and hold the ones that do. Book hotel nights that work for a day start or a night start, and book the trip in. Hold the trip home, and hold anything pinned to a clock.

The time decides when the game ends, so it can decide whether a flight home the same night is realistic. Lock in a hotel, flights and timed plans before the time exists, and the announcement can force a rebooking. Wait on all of it instead, and you trade choice for certainty. Both of those are real, and they don’t fall on the same pieces of the trip.

One question sorts nearly everything. Does this piece change if the game is a day start instead of a night start? If it doesn’t, book it.

When Is a College Football Kickoff Time Announced?

Colorado’s athletics site publishes the windows for its Big 12 games. Typically, it says, the networks announce game times for the first three weeks of the season in mid to late May. After that, game times and television are announced 12 days ahead, the Monday the week before the game. The networks can also choose six days ahead.

Nebraska’s athletics site gives the same two numbers for its remaining Big Ten games. It says that, other than its Black Friday game, its remaining Big Ten kickoff times and broadcast information are announced either 12 or six days in advance of kickoff. Two schools, two conferences, the same two numbers.

The Colorado page adds two details. It says the six-day option is open to the networks four times a season, and that they will not choose a game any closer than the Sunday before it. That choice belongs to the networks and the Big 12 conference, and the page’s own advice is to stay flexible.

Those are two schools in two conferences. Other conferences and schools can run on different windows, so check the schedule page of the school you’re planning around and read what it says about times still to come. And for these two schools, a game after the first three weeks of the season, other than Nebraska’s Black Friday game, carries a plain consequence: a trip booked more than 12 days out is a trip booked without the time.

Hotel Nights Should Work for a Day Game and a Night Game

Book the night before the game and the night of the game. Two nights cover either start, which takes the hotel out of the guessing. A night start can finish late enough that a flight home the same night stops making sense, and the second night is what absorbs that. Before you book, ask the hotel what its cancellation deadline is, and write that date down somewhere you’ll find it again.

A post on choosing a home-game weekend runs the same hotel logic against start times that were already published for one school’s home games, if you want to see how a night kickoff changes the hotel math in practice.

The Trip Home Is the Piece the Kickoff Time Controls

Plan the trip home for the day after the game. That works under either start, and it closes the one question the time controls. A departure the same night is a bet on a time that hasn’t been published.

As a hypothetical, picture a game listed with the time still to come. There’s nothing in that line to size a same-night departure against.

If you have to leave the same night, hold that booking until the time is announced. Before you pay for it, ask the airline what changing the booking would involve. A drive home is the same call with a different clock: the day after is settled, the same night depends on a start you don’t have.

Dinners, Tours and Meetups Wait for the Time

Hold anything pinned to a clock. A group dinner, a tour, a meetup with friends coming in from elsewhere: each one is built around a start time, and each one can break when the real start lands somewhere else.

So either wait for the announcement, or pick plans you can move. A loose window beats a fixed reservation when the fixed point of the weekend hasn’t been set. Parking and local transportation sit in between: ask what the options are early, then settle the timing once the time is out. And tell the group the plan is a window, not a time, so nobody books a departure around it.

How Far Out the Game Is Changes the Order

The order doesn’t change with the calendar. What changes is how much of it you can finish.

More Than 12 Days Out

For a game after the first three weeks at either school above, other than Nebraska’s Black Friday game, the time isn’t out yet, so plan around its absence. Book the hotel nights and the trip in. Hold the trip home and every timed plan until the window opens.

Inside the Announcement Window

The time may already be posted, so read it off the school’s schedule page before you book another thing. If it’s there, tighten the plan around it: the departure, the dinner, the local transportation. Then recheck the cancellation deadlines you wrote down.

A Return Trip That Can’t Move

If the trip home is fixed by work or by who’s traveling with you, build the weekend around a day-after departure instead of hoping for a day start. Book that leg and let the game fall where it falls. It’s the one case where locking the return early is the calmer choice.

What This Plan Gives Up

The two-night plan can leave you with a night the final time didn’t need. Holding the trip home means booking it later than you’d like. And waiting for the announcement before you book anything at all trades choice for certainty, because the pieces that don’t depend on the time are the easiest ones to settle early. Those are tradeoffs to weigh, not reasons to drop the order.

Timing a booking for price is a separate question, and a separate post covers when to book flights and hotels. This article is about information timing: the piece that hasn’t been published yet, and which parts of the trip hang on it.

Frequently Asked Questions About College Football Kickoff Times

When Are College Football Kickoff Times Announced?

For the two schools cited above, the windows are published. Colorado’s athletics site says the networks typically announce times for the first three weeks of the season in mid to late May, and after that 12 days ahead, with a six-day option. Nebraska’s athletics site says that, other than its Black Friday game, its remaining Big Ten kickoff times and broadcast information are announced either 12 or six days in advance of kickoff. For any other school, check its own schedule page.

Should I Book a Hotel Before the Kickoff Time Is Announced?

Yes, as long as you book two nights: the night before the game and the night of the game. That pair works whether the game turns out to be a day start or a night start. Ask for the cancellation deadline before you book, and keep a note of it.

Should I Book the Flight Home Before the Time Is Announced?

A departure the day after the game is the one to book, because it works under either start. A departure the same night rides on a time nobody has published, so hold it. If you must leave that night, wait for the announcement first, and ask the airline what changing a booking would involve.

Can I Make Dinner or Tour Reservations Before the Time Is Set?

Hold them if you can. Anything tied to a start or a finish can break when the real time lands somewhere else. If you’d rather commit, pick plans you can move, and tell the group the time is still open.

What If the Game Is Closer Than 12 Days Away?

Check the school’s schedule page first, because the time may already be posted. If it is, tighten the plan around it and recheck your cancellation deadlines. For the two schools cited above, a time can also arrive six days out, so a blank line on a schedule doesn’t mean the weekend can’t be planned.

Who Can Line Up a College Football Weekend Around the Kickoff Time?

An organizer can run this order alone, or hand the logistics over. Major League Vacations coordinates hotel proximity, arrival timing, local transportation and game-day logistics for college football trips. The sports-travel team can keep a package simple or coordinate the full itinerary from arrival through the final whistle.
